Case study - Tax refund claim

Name: Helen Lewis

Refund obtained: £605

Date of refund: August 2008

Helen had been out of the UK travelling for a couple of years and was a little unsure about her tax situation. She knew she'd paid tax before she went away but didn’t know how much or with what job. To add the problems she hadn’t kept any of the required P60s or P45s that are needed to make a claim. Taxdoctor contacted all her previous employers and requested copies of the missing documents. We managed to get hold of them, submitted her claim to HMRC and 6 weeks later she was £600 better off.

Here's what Helen has to say about her taxdoctor experience:

It didn't even occur to me when I returned from over 2 years of travelling that I might be owed money from the tax office. There I was scrimping and saving desperately trying to pay back some the large debt I'd racked up whilst on sunnier shores (it had definitely been worth it though!)

When Tax doctor suggested that I may be owed some money I was pretty excited until I remembered back to a couple of months earlier when I'd had a big clear out and thrown away all my old papers - including my P45s and P60's! In fact I could hardly even remember where I worked as I'd had so many temporary assignments before I left to go travelling.

Tax doctor said to leave it with them, all I had to do was try and remember names of places I worked. So I submitted my form and thought nothing more of it. Around 6 weeks later I received a text telling me that they'd managed to get back just over £600 for me and it would be credited to my account within the next couple of days. Imagine my delight as I realised I could probably pay off my debts and buy that new pair of shoes I wanted!

I was so pleased with this outcome that I went in to work the next day and told all of my all of my colleagues about tax doctor and the wonderful service they provide. Since then two of them have also made claims, getting over £500 each. Makes me wonder just how much money the tax people could owe the likes of you and me?
