Tax return deadline: beat the taxman’s £100 fine.
If you’re dealt with under the self-assessment tax system in the UK (and nearly 9m people are) then you need to have your tax return for 2007/08 submitted by the 31st January to avoid a £100 fine – taxdoctor explains more.
Last year nearly £1 million people failed to get their self assessment tax return in on time, missing the deadline and each paying HMRC £100 for their tardiness. That’s around £100 million into the government’s coffers. Times are hard just now without throwing good money away needlessly!
The main types of people who would need to complete a tax return are those who let out a property, are self employed, have made a capital gain or earn over £100,000 from PAYE sources.
If any of these apply to you for the period between April 2007 and April 2008 then you need to complete a tax return.
You’re too late now to submit your tax return in paper format so it’s got to be done online. If you’re going to tackle it yourself then you’ll need to get an activation pin from HMRC, if you haven’t already got one. It takes 7 days to reach you so get on the case sooner rather than later. Visit the self assessment activation page on HMRC’s website.
HMRC’s Stephen Banyard said: "Don't forget - if you are filing your return in January, you need to do it online. It is quick, secure and convenient, and if you have not filed online before there is plenty of help and support available."
